South Bank Carnival has been saved for one more year at least - thanks to a chance meeting.
The carnival committee, previously responsible for co-ordinating the event, disbanded earlier this year.
But committee member George Pushnon met Graham Hubbard, of Job Connect, who offered to take over the role.
"I decided I just couldn't run it any more because I am getting on in years," said Mr Pushnon. "I met Graham at the Skills Village in Redcar and he offered to take on the responsibility of running the carnival. I'm just chairing the meetings now but in a short time Graham has got everything moving and I'm very grateful to him."
The carnival will take place on Saturday, August 30 and will include a cowboy show as part of the main afternoon entertainment and music will include live bands and DJs as well as jazz bands.
There will be break dancing, basketball and martial arts demonstrations, and exhibitions from the BBC, the fire brigade, and Middlesbrough Football Academy.
More unusual events include the End of Pier Show, Hi-Flyers Cheerleaders and clog dancing.
Children can enjoy a performance from an entertainer and workshops from the Play and Education Resource Centre.
