POLICE are urging people to be aware of a scam in which thieves have tried to trick their victims into helping them take cash.
The thieves have stolen bank and credit cards from shop staff across North Yorkshire and then phoned their victims in an attempt to get their pin numbers.
In at least three incidents in Thornton-le-Dale, Malton and Selby over the past week, shop staff discovered that their bags or purses had been stolen from their workplace.
They later received a phone call from someone pretending to be a police officer or staff member from their bank asking what their pin number was.
According to a North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman, none of the victims gave those details to the caller, although in similar cases elsewhere other victims have given the number to the caller.
Now police officers are issuing a warning to the public never to reveal their personal pin number, and are urging anyone else who falls victim to this kind of scam to phone them immediately on (01609) 783131.
