AXE-WIELDING athletes and a thrilling ride along forest roads at 100mph in a virtual rally car are two of the star attractions at a forest festival.
The Forestry Commission is staging its annual fun-day at 18th Century Kielder Castle, in Northumberland, in the heart of Europe's biggest man-made wood, on Sunday.
The event includes husky dog racing, birds of prey, circus workshops, ancient crafts and a rare chance to see horse logging and harvesters in action.
Also appearing is the South West Axe Team, one of only three in the UK.
The sport of axe racing has its roots in the Australian outback, when bragging bushmen challenged each other to competitions.
The aim is to chop through logs in the shortest time, with an added bonus of a clash between man and machine in the shape of a chainsaw versus cross-saw race.
Those yearning for high-octane fun can try a virtual reality forest rally.
Computers, hydraulic pumps, video screen and surround sound combine to offer a realistic sensation of racing through the trees.
The event is from 10.30am to 5pm and entry is £3 for adults, and £2 for concessions. A family ticket is £8, admitting two adults and two children.
Bus service 714 leaves for the event from Gateshead bus station at 10.35am. Stopping points include Newcastle Central Station and Haymarket Bus Station.
