A whippet covered in scabs and without any fur has been found roaming around a housing estate.
The male dog, which is about a year old, has been described as "looking like a pink rhino", because it has an inflamed skin condition.
It was found last week in the streets of the Hardwick Estate, Stockton, and handed in to Stockton Borough Council.
The dog, which was also very thin, is being housed at the National Canine Defence League in Sadberge, near Darlington.
"He was in extreme discomfort," said council animal welfare officer Michelle Johnson.
"His skin was very inflamed and he looked like a pink rhino. Thankfully, a woman found him and contacted us. He's been at the vet's a few times and is being treated, although we can't be sure if he has mange.
"He's come on so much since we've had him. He's friendly and just wants to play."
It is thought the dog may be part of an original litter which may be in the same state and animal welfare officers are appealing for information.
Calls will be treated confidentially on (01642) 391126. Anyone interested in adopting it can phone the same number.
