SAFETY checks have been carried out on taxis in a North-East resort.
Fifteen taxis were stopped in Scarborough at the weekend, 11 had defects requiring attention.
The checks were carried out by North Yorkshire Police, the Vehicle Inspectorate, the Department of Works and Pensions and officers from Scarborough Borough Council's housing benefit and licensing department.
Six taxis were taken off the road and issued with delayed prohibition notices enforcing defects relating to brakes, steering and suspension to be fixed.
One vehicle was given an immediate prohibition notice and taken off the road with serious tyre defects. Four more taxi drivers were advised of minor defects that needed fixing.
The Department of Works and Pensions is investigating a suspected benefits fraud.
