THE Archbishop of York yesterday raised his hat to the work of 999 crews when he opened a fire station.
Dr David Hope performed the honours at the premises in Huntington, York, and was joined at the ceremony by divisional fire officer Graham Buckle.
The station was completed last year, but only become fully-operational in the past few months.
It has direct access on to the A1237 York ring road, and is run by a 15-strong team of retained firefighters with two full-time sub officers.
The station was built alongside a training complex for firefighters, both made possible through a private finance initiative (PFI).
It was one of the first PFIs in the country and designated as a flagship scheme by the Government.
