RECORD Breakers, the old TV show hosted by the late Roy Castle, would have delighted in this week's racing.
Mark Johnston romped to his fastest UK 100 seasonal wins, went through the £1m prize money mark again and, as this was his tenth successive century, also beat the record of nine tons he held jointly last year with Henry Cecil.
His record-breaker was Knavesmire Omen at Glorious Goodwood, ridden by Darryll Holland in a masterly front-running fashion.
This was a notable Middleham day altogether as the Goodwood Stakes runner-up was neighbour Patrick Haslam's Positive Profile. At 7-1 and 33-1, this gave a straight forecast of £227.36, but Tote players took an exacta of £509.50.
Johnston's young stable jockey Keith Dalgleish was in the saddle on Lucky Story, a colt by Kris S, in the next race on the card, the Group 2 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes.
The young colt won well, even if a bit green, and the trainer said afterwards he was the best of this year's Kingsley House juveniles - and what a batch they are! "He's built, bred and has the form for the (2,000) Guineas," added the trainer, looking to next year.
Parkview Love, his other runner in the race, was hampered in running but did land valuable prize money in fifth. More will come from this youngster.
Johnston, who was leading trainer at Royal Ascot this year, was well on the way to doing the same on the Sussex Downs. But he was not helped in the Tote Gold Trophy when Double Obsession (a winner at Ascot last Saturday) and Financial Future were among the front-runners, and faded. His third runner, Greta D'Argent, who had won at Doncaster's evening meeting last Thursday, was fifth.
Darasim had set Johnston off on Tuesday by landing the Ladbrokes.com Prestige Stakes under Joe Fanning, while Richard Fahey sent out Definite Guest to a cracking third in the opening handicap.
David Nicholls' record-breaker, Zuhair, four times successive winner of the Charlton Stakes, had the honour of having the race re-named after him on Wednesday, but could only finish eighth.
George Moore notched his 700th career winner at Hamilton on Thursday evening last when La Sylphide romped in under young Tom Eaves. The Middleham trainer has taken 538 National Hunt victories and 162 on the level since he started training in 1984. The racecourse executive presented him with a crate of whisky afterwards.
Karl Burke, who trains nearby at Spigot Lodge, sent Darren Williams on a lone trail by the far rail to win on Wares Home. He scored three in the day, with one at Bath and another later at the Scottish course.
Settrington trainer John Quinn also won at Bath, young Luke Fletcher notching a double with this win and Burke's.
Quinn went on to Ascot on Friday, where Fantasy Believer beat David Nicholls' Onlytime Will Tell. Darryll Holland, the winning pilot on Quinn's runner, notched his own seasonal 100th that evening at Chepstow.
