A COLLECTOR of vintage radios has added a new wireless to his collection - thanks to the kindness of a visitor from abroad.
Jo Baker was given a rare wartime radio by Dieter Steinberg, who came to Darlington with wife Ilse as part of a twinning trip from Mulheim, in Germany.
Mr Baker, a member of Darlington Twinning Association, had previously told Mr Steinberg how much he wanted the radio, known as a Goebbels Schnautzer because it could only receive propaganda from the Nazi war machine.
"Dieter contacted the Mulheim Amateur Radio Club and they generously donated the set for my collection," said the 76-year-old, from Ravensworth, North Yorkshire. "I was delighted as it was made in 1940 and is pretty rare. It was such a nice gesture."
About 30 Germans visited Darlington at the beginning of last month. The twinning association is planning a return visit next month.
