A waste recycling site will be opened next week.
Newcastle City Council, which has redeveloped its waste reception site at Walbottle, will officially open the facility on Monday.
The city council needs to improve Newcastle's recycling rate to meet the Government's tough environmental targets.
The facility has been designed to make it easier for the public to recycle a variety of its waste, including paper, glass, cans, oil, green waste, timber, soils and aggregates, cardboard, textiles, plastic bottles, telephone directories and car batteries.
The site will be capable of handling more than 10,000 tonnes of waste a year, and the council expects to recycle and recover about 70 per cent of this material.
