A SCHEME to encourage young arsonists and other children to become model citizens is to be launched by County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.
The brigade plans to hold training days later this year to teach young people firefighting skills and citizenship, in partnership with schools and other emergency services.
Brigade spokesman Dave Turnbull said two officers had been appointed to run the "social inclusion" courses.
Unlike last year's scheme, Firebreak, a variety of children will be involved, not just offenders or those at risk of offending.
"Hopefully, we will produce a lot of model citizens," said Mr Turnbull. "A number of children from all walks of life will be invited to take part. Not all of them will have had a fascination with fire, but some of them will."
He said Firebreak, launched a year ago, had proved a success, with 12 children completing the course. "The youths we have had have totally changed. They go back into school as role models. If we can get some more kids and change their perspective it will be worthwhile."
