A COUNCIL is about to introduce limits on the amount of waste that will be collected by its bulky waste collection service.
The policy by Sunderland City Council, to take effect on September 1, will also set a ceiling on the number of bulky collections that any one household can request in a year.
Demand for the service has increased by more than 50 per cent in the past four years - from 95,378 requests in 1999-2000 to 145,161 during 2002-2003.
Over the same period, the amount of household rubbish the council has to pay contractors to dispose of has increased by 17,000 tonnes per year.
From next month, each household will be limited to three bulky rubbish collections in each financial year, a maximum of eight items will be removed on each visit and a maximum of four bags of rubble, bricks, soil will be removed on each visit.
A washing machine, fridge, cooker, settee, armchair, dining table, dining chair, bed mattress, bed base, and carpet would each count as one item.
