A NEW strategy to tackle the management of waste and Yorkshire's growing rubbish mountain was unveiled yesterday.
Minister for the Environment Elliot Morley and Yorkshire and Humber MEP Diane Wallis spoke at a meeting to launch the first Yorkshire and Humber Waste Strategy.
The plan -- Let's Take It From The Tip - focuses on four objectives: to increase recycling; bring together regional planning policies; increase community involve- ment; and find less damaging ways of dealing with residual waste.
Local authorities, which already have Government-set targets to meet for recycling, will benefit from the regional strategy to get new waste management facilities and support to lobby the UK and EU governments on new policies and funding programmes.
The strategy also identifies as a priority the need for the region to work with local organisations to change the "throw-away" culture and to encourage more community recycling.
The fresh approach was drawn up by the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly following a number of public workshops in the area.
