CROOKS attempting smash and grab raids on pub fruit machines will soon get more than they gambled on.
Northumbria Police is helping Houghton-le-Spring and Hetton-le-Hole landlords improve the odds of catching burglars who target the machines. Several pubs in the area have been targeted by thieves over the past six weeks. To prevent further attacks, publicans are using a "smart water" device hidden inside the machines. If they are broken into, thieves are sprayed with an invisible liquid which lasts several months and shows up under ultra-violet light. Cash for the scheme came from Hetton Community Police Team officers, through the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. Sergeant Henry Gustard said: "This is a clever device which can literally help us catch thieves red-handed. Burglars who are intent on committing these offences should think twice."
