A WARNING has been issued to anyone found destroying birds nests that they could face a big fine or even prison.
Police in Yarm, near Stockton, have received a number of reports from residents who have found water birds nests destroyed by stones thrown into them - in some cases smashing all the eggs inside.
It is an offence under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird or intentionally destroy an egg of a wild bird.
PC Rob King, wildlife officer with Cleveland Police, said: "Each offence can result in six months imprisonment or a fine of up to £5,000, or both. If more than one egg is destroyed in a single offence then each egg constitutes a separate fine. Six eggs destroyed equals six times the fine - £30,000."
PC King will be monitoring activities with the help of residents and, he warned, anyone found committing an offence will be prosecuted.
