ABOUT 200 boats will take to the water today as a national competition comes to the North-East.
The sailing dinghies will set off from the beach at Roker, Sunderland, this morning, for the Topper Nationals Championships.
It is the first time the event - a major race for young sailors - has been held in the region.
Dave Wheldon, of hosts Sunderland Yacht Club, said: "I am delighted that Sunderland has been chosen to host this major sailing event. It demonstrates just how much the city has to offer as a centre for watersports.
"With more than 200 boats sailing off Roker and Sea-burn, this will be an amazing spectacle for everyone watching."
