Edwin Jowsey recorded another victory last Sunday at Snetterton, Norfolk. Driving a Lotus F3, Edwin and Team Garbutt Heaters decided to forgo practicing on Saturday, and arrived later that evening.
Edwin had not driven the Lotus at Snetterton since last year, but he had raced the Brabham F2 only four weeks previous when he started from the back of the field to win the race.
Driving to extent his lead at the top of the HSCC Championship, Edwin encountered a different set of competitors. After an evening of preparation and tactics, Edwin had the good fortune to be selected for qualifying first.
Edwin: I like to get out first, as it gives me a clear track in front with no other cars to watch out for. After four or five laps my tires had warm up sufficiently to really push the Lotus to its limits.
Sure enough Edwin registered an extremely fast fifth qualifying lap with a time of 1 minute 18 seconds. His closet rival during qualification was the current HSCC champion who reordered a time of 1 minute 21 seconds.
Edwin: I was ecstatic to secure pole, especially on this circuit as it has a number of fast straights, and is regarded as quite a high-speed track.
"I thought if I could maintain the lead from the start, then I could accelerate away and put the onus onto my competitors to challenge for the lead. Recently I've worked hard to gradually build up leads only to see them diminish due to slow back markers holding me up.
Before the start of the race, the Team Garbutt Heaters' mechanics made the final checks to the Lotus and gave the green light for Edwin to take his position on the starting grid. The weather was overcast but warm. When the race commenced, Edwin stuck to the team strategy and made a blistering fast start. Out of a field of nineteen cars, Edwin led the race from start to finish. He never allowed any other driver to get a clear chance of taking the lead from him. After taking the checkered flag and gaining full championship points, Edwin was presented with a laurel and a large cut glass trophy.
Edwin will be racing tomorrow at Castle Combe, Somerset. Racing a Brabham F2, competing in the BRSCC Championship.
