For more than four decades the name of Brian Lander was synonomous with the Federation Special Durham Senior League but it is his son David who makes the headlines these days.
He joined Burnmoor in 1998 and has been a regular in the second team helping the side to considerable success with his right-arm medium-pace bowling. David has been a frequent wicket-taker but he excelled in the recent second team league game at Horden, when he took all ten wickets for just 19 runs in 13.3 overs. "It was a great thrill to take the ten wickets," exclaimed David. "As I was getting near, I kept thinking to myself, would I beat my previous best-ever performance of eight wickets in a match.
"I got to nine and the adrenalin was flowing. I could hardly contain my excitement and all the lads were urging me on. It was great when I captured the wicket of the last batsman. My dad played successfully for Durham City and for Durham County for years, and took hundreds of wickets but never managed ten in a game. I now have one record he was unable to achieve!"
David followed in his father's footsteps and began his career with Durham City with whom Brian played all his life. When he moved to Burnmoor, David switched clubs much to the delight of stalwart Ian Linsley, who now captains the Burnmoor Second XI.
"David is a model player. He is always willing to play and never lets the side down. I am proud to be his captain and everybody at the club is over the moon at his achievement.
"Only a very few players ever manage to take ten wickets so his day at Horden will certainly be memorable. I gave him the ball immediately after the game and we will be making a presentation to him in the near future," added Linsley.
