A WOMAN suffered cuts and bruises when a box containing an explosive device blew up in her face yesterday.
A police spokesman said officers were called to Hill Crest, in Jarrow, Tyneside, at 11.20am after a woman reported that a "small bomb" had exploded in her face.
The spokesman said: The woman said she had found a small box in a garden. She had gone to open it and it had exploded in her face. She was calling from a neigbour's house."
A police search advisor and the Ministry of Defence bomb disposal squad were called in and a 50m cordon thrown up around the scene.
Experts were last night still making an assessment of the device which exploded.
