COMMUNITY payback schemes are taking place throughout the summer, allowing young offenders to put something back into the community.
Sunderland's Youth Offending Service organises work programmes throughout the year, but the summer months allow a lot of outdoor schemes, such as gardening, to take place under supervision.
Churchyards, school playgrounds, Sunderland synagogue and local beauty spots are among those to benefit.
Some youth clubs, community centres and advice centres will also get a fresh lick of paint.
Restorative Justice co-ordinator Greg Wheatley said: "This is an opportunity for young people who have offended to accept responsibility for what they have done and put something back into the community."
Youth Offending Service manager Judith Hay said: "Community Payback in Sunderland has gone from strength to strength.
"Young people who have offended are given the chance to repay the community through 18 schemes that we offer."
Any organisation or charity who wishes to propose a scheme can contact Mr Wheatley on 0191-553 7327.
