AMATEUR actors will have the honour of performing the first play at a refurbished theatre this evening.
Fundraisers are still trying to find the remaining £160,000 needed to cover the £1.5m bill for the restoration of the Georgian Theatre Royal, in Richmond, North Yorkshire.
Applications have been submitted for additional grants, and the management is hopeful of good news within the next few weeks.
But, in the meantime, the show will go on when Richmond Amateur Dramatic Society presents She Stoops to Conquer tonight, tomorrow and on Saturday.
A second run of the production will follow from Wednesday until Saturday next week.
She Stoops to Conquer was chosen because it was among the first to be performed at the theatre after its original launch in 1788.
Tickets are priced from £4 and are available by telephoning the box office on (01748) 825252.
