COUNCIL tenants who have special needs are being sought to take part in a fire safety initiative.
Smoke detectors are already fitted in most properties owned by Richmondshire District Council.
However, the authority is considering extending the level of protection offered to its disabled tenants and those who are hearing impaired.
It has linked up with North Yorkshire's Fire and Rescue Service to offer sprinkler systems on trial to anyone who may struggle to reach safety in an emergency.
Housing manager, Colin Dales, said: "The sprinkler system is intended for disabled people who will have trouble vacating their home if the fire alarm sounds.
"However, if the pilot scheme is successful, we will consider building it into our mainstream improvement programme."
The trials will begin next month and the council will cover installation costs and reimburse tenants for any disturbance to decorations.
In common with central heating units, the sprinkler system requires a lot of pipework and each sprinkler head operates independently after detecting a fire.
Residents who would like to take part in the trial is asked to telephone (01748) 829115.
