REDCAR'S Mayor, Councillor Norah Cooney, opened a sensory garden at one of the town's care homes on Saturday.

The garden, at Bupa's Inglewood Nursing Home, in Deal Road, has been created as a sensory oasis for residents and relatives.

Several paths have been laid, flowerbeds have been created and raised flowerbeds will be built as the garden develops.

A team, led by home manager Dan Yates and maintenance manager Brian Taylor, have also built a potting shed in the garden, to allow residents to get involved.

Mr Yates said: "We are so pleased at the amount of interest our sensory garden has created so far, and very grateful for all the help and advice given to us.

"We now just have to keep our fingers crossed for some good weather."

Inglewood Nursing Home is one of 90 Bupa care homes across the UK that has developed a sensory garden.

This year, for the second year in a row, Bupa teamed up with national horticultural charity Thrive to develop gardens designed to stimulate the senses.

The firm also invited green-fingered volunteers to get gardening, get fit and help create the gardens.
