With the new term just around the corner, Women's Editor Christen Pears finds the best places to buy school uniforms.
THE holidays are almost over and it's time to start thinking about going back to school, but buying a new uniform need not be an expensive business.
High street stores and supermarkets all offer a wide range of uniform items and accessories. The latest clothes are designed with fashion conscious youngsters in mind but are also hard-wearing and stain resistant. Most lines are also machine washable and non-iron, which makes life easier for mum.
Marks & Spencer sells everything a child needs, from schoolwear and educational books to toys and nutritional snacks and lunches.
M&S schoolwear is tough and durable and uses the latest hi-tech innovations, including scuff-resistant and washable leather shoes, Teflon coated stain and water repellent clothes and non-iron, quick dry shirts.
BHS boasts that its schoolwear is tested on real kids and is designed to take the toughest treatment. All items are machine washable and most have a non-iron finish. All school uniforms are cut to include growing room as standard.
Adams, the specialist children's store, combines sensible schoolwear with classroom chic. Girls will love the fashion skirts with mock belts, silver glitter hair grips and co-ordinating scrunchies. The boys will be kept happy with the cool, two-tone key ring that comes as standard with a variety of trousers in the range.
Woolworths offers a wide range of basic uniform items in a wide range of colours, from skirts and shirts to socks and underwear. Kids will also love the latest ranges of stationery, backpacks and lunchboxes. Girls can choose from Barbie, Bang on the Door or Little Miss Naughty, while boys will be torn between Commando and Beyblades products.
The supermarkets are also getting in on the act, offering stylish schoolwear at affordable prices. Another advantage is that you can kit your children while out while you do the weekly shop.
One of the best finds is George at Asda's non-iron blazer for just £15. Girls' cardigans retail from £5 while boys' zip-through micro fleeces are selling for £6. Everything is made from easy care and durable fabrics.
During the past two years, Tesco has conducted extensive customer research and has developed its back to school range accordingly.
Trousers and skirts have Teflon coating, which is both stain resistant and hard-wearing. It also reduces the need for ironing. There's no need to worry about shrinking knitwear. All clothing is machine washable and can be tumble dried.
This year, finding footwear will be even easier, following the introduction of the Toe Zone. Just place the child's foot against the brightly coloured indicators to find out their size. It guarantees the perfect fit and removes the hassle of trying on dozens of pairs of shoes.
