ONE of North Yorkshire's swimming pools is to be closed for a fortnight for essential maintenance work and to remove asbestos from the building.
The Edmund Wilson Pool, in York, will be closed from today until the end of the month. New gym equipment will be installed, the centre will undergo some redecoration and the urgent work to remove asbestos carried out. Asbestos was originally used in the construction of the centre, which was built in 1969, but does not pose any risk to the general public. However, in line with current building regulations it is being removed as a precautionary measure.
SHOW DATE: This year's Egton Agricultural Show will be on Wednesday, August 20. Among those taking part this year are exhibitors from Made in Yorkshire, the craft group formed from the former Dalesmade and Brigantia craft organisations.
GOLF HAUL: Golfing equipment worth about £7,000 was stolen from a car parked outside the Blue Bell pub at Weaverthorpe, near Malton. The haul included clubs, an electric trolley, a gold bag and clothing.
ROAD CLOSURE: Motorists at Beningbrough, near York, are being warned about the temporary closure of part of New Road between Thursday and Monday. The carriageway is being resurfaced but an alternative route will be in place.
MUSIC RECITAL: The assistant director of music at Ripon Cathedral will be giving an organ recital on Bank Holiday Monday at 3pm. There will be a retiring collection.
CLEANER ALLEYS: The maze of alleyways leading from Thirsk's Market Place are to be smartened up with the help of funding from the town's Regeneration Initiative.
