HOUSE BLAZE: Firefighters were called to a house in Walker Drive, Woodhouse Close Estate, Bishop Auckland at about 3am yesterday. The ground floor of the home was badly damaged.
WARDEN RETIRES: John Bowman has stepped down as churchwarden at St James the Great Church, in Albert Hill, Darlington. Mr Bowman, who was warden for 29 years, was presented with a cheque by Father Ian Grieves, who thanked him for his hard work over the years.

SHED BURGLED: A shed in Bramall Lane, Red Hall, Darlington was raided on Saturday. Two bicycles and a lawnmower were stolen.
EXTENSION WANTED: An application for planning permission to build a single-storey rear extension to a house in Judith Close, Heighington, near Darlington, has been received by Darlington Borough Council.
CAR CRIME: A radio was stolen from a Renault Clio car in Gladstone Street, Darlington, on Saturday, between 6pm and 9.20pm.
ACCESS RAMP: The Halifax bank has applied to Darlington Borough Council to install an access ramp for use by disabled people at its premises in Duke Street.
CHARITY DATE: St Elizabeth's Church Hall, St Elizabeth Close, Woodham, will host an open day as part of Cats Protection Week on Sunday September 7, from 2pm to 5pm.
