PAUL Collingwood will be back in the Durham first team on Wednesday for the championship match against Hampshire at Riverside.
After making the game's top score of 79 in the second team's innings win against Warwickshire at Seaton Carew last week, he is likely to take over from the struggling Vince Wells.
"Paul got through about 15 overs in the game with no problems, so we are hopeful he will be able to bowl for us if necessary," said coach Martyn Moxon.
"Vince is still struggling with his wrist injury. It seemed OK when we practised last Tuesday, then he had problems with it overnight in Cardiff. But by then we were snookered and he played when he wasn't really fit. He is going to have another X-ray on it."
Glamorgan needed only 13 balls on Saturday to score the 12 runs they needed to secure an eight-wicket win.
Durham were not happy about some of the lbw decisions given by umpire Mark Benson during their second innings collapse.
"Jon Lewis got a nick on his and Vince thought he did as well," said Moxon. "The ball was reverse swinging a long way and considering how far Martin Love and Nicky Peng got forward I was surprised how quickly they were given out.
"We have to give Michael Kasprowicz credit because he bowled very well, but our top order batted poorly in the first innings apart from Peng, and dropped catches in their innings probably cost us 100 runs.
"The ball was reverse swinging all match. It can happen when conditions are very dry and the ball gets scuffed up.
"We did not have the pace in our attack to take advantage. It can be difficult to adjust when a ball is reverse swinging at Kasprowicz's pace, so Shoaib Akhtar would have been a real handful.
"He had a chest infection, but he has rung me from Pakistan to see how we got on. He's feeling better and we're confident he'll be back for the game at Northampton."
Although Durham took only six points from the game at Sophia Gardens, they narrowed the gap on Yorkshire to 2.75 and on Gloucestershire to 1.25. Glamorgan moved from sixth to third, but any of the four teams could still grab the third promotion place.
Durham hope Shoaib can help them gain revenge when the Welshmen visit Riverside for the final championship match on September 17.
