A NORTH-EAST animal rehoming centre is at crisis point after being overcrowded with unwanted dogs during the summer holidays.
The National Canine Defence League (NCDL), at Sadberge, near Darlington, has more than 120 dogs that are desperate for new homes.
Staff are struggling to cope with the large number of animals that have been abandoned.
NCDL manager Catherine Gillie said it was a sad fact that many dogs were left to their own devices during the summer.
She said: "It is one of our busiest times of the year. Many dogs are simply dump-ed on the streets while the rest of the family goes on holiday.
"Sometimes people go on holiday without finding anyone to take care of their dogs. They are left to fend for themselves and we have to pick up the pieces."
The centre was now full, but space was still needed formore dogs, Mrs Gillie said.
In order to do that, the centre needed to find homes for those it was already caring for.
Among the dogs waiting to be rehomed is Taz, a four-year-old lurcher, who needs two short walks a day and would be best with a family who have children over the age of 12.
A terrier cross called Dexi also needs new owners. The dog, who is eight, has had medical problems and has a worn hip. Dexi is slightly arthritic and can only walk on three of his legs. The animal loves people and likes the company of other dogs.
Staff also need to rehome Toffee, an 18-month cream lurcher, and Kerry, a Staffordshire bull terrier.
In order to combat the overcrowding problem workers are advising people not to abandon dogs while they go on holiday.
Alternatives include leaving pets with friends or neighbours, employing companies who have pet sitters, or leaving them at boarding kennels.
Anyone who wishes to adopt a pet can contact NCDL on (01325) 333114.
