A YOUNG soldier has met a top general only six months into his training.
James Stewart, of the 1st Battalion King's Regiment, became the 2000th soldier to earn an NVQ after studying at Darlington College, at Catterick.
The 17-year-old received a certificate and commemorative award from the man in charge of the British Army in the North of England and Scotland, the General Officer Commanding 2nd Division Major General Nick Parker.
Kingsman Stewart has combined his basic infantry training with an S/NVQ Level 2 in Public Services.
"It was a great course," said Kingsman Stewart. "It was built into my Army training so I didn't really notice the extra work and it will certainly help me with my career."
General Parker said: "If he ever does leave the Army he will have an NVQ to put before any potential employer which has got to be a good thing."
College principal Sarah Farley was delighted for James. She said: "This is an example of the excellent partnership the College has with the Army and in particular the UK Infantry are committed to providing first class training and qualifications for the soldiers."
