A small flower show held 82 years ago in Harrogate has blossomed into one of the country's major floral events.

The town hosted the first North of England Horticultural Society's flower show in 1921, and now it is part of the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show, staged at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

The event will bring down the curtain on the country's premier flower show season.

Society spokeswoman Mary Bond said: "Nowhere is the society's commitment to supporting horticulture in the North more apparent than the autumn show.

Here, 14 amateur horticultural societies are provided with facilities to hold their own show within a show in the specialist 4,000sq ft marquee."

One of the major flower halls is being taken over by the National Vegetable Society for the event which runs from September 12 to 14.

Another bid will be made to break the world record for the heaviest onion. Despite attempts from growers across the country, the record set in 1995 remains intact. It stands at 15lbs 15.5oz.

The weigh-in will take place on the opening day of the show.

More than 90 horticultural nurseries have booked in for the event.

Tickets are on sale each day at the gate at £10. There is a £2 discount on tickets booked before noon on September 5.

The ticket hotline can be contacted on 0870 758 333.
