AN appeal has been lodged with the Government after Darlington Borough Council refused planning permission for a village home.

Howard Developments has appealed against the decision to the Secretary of the State for the Environment.

On April 30, the council refused permission to build a house in a side garden at a home in Manor Road, Hurworth Place, near Darlington.

Plans for a single-storey side extension to an existing home were also refused.

Councillors felt the development was out of keeping with the character of the area and detrimental to the appearance of the street.

Councillors also believed the proposed building would result in a loss of open space which contributed to the housing estate environment.

Anyone wishing to comment on the development can contact the Department of the Environment via Darlington council. Letters to the planning inspectorate must be received by September 23.
