CRUMBLING North-East landmarks competing for the largest ever television makeover prize could win £3m, it was announced yesterday.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has pledged the sum towards restoring the building which is saved by viewers of the BBC Two series Restoration, screened on Tuesday and Friday nights.

Harperley Prisoner of War Camp, built in 1943, near Crook, County Durham, and 14th Century Ravensworth Castle, near Gateshead, were among 30 properties chosen for the programme because they were deemed at risk by English Heritage.

They will feature in the programme on September 2, along with the Glass House at Wentworth Castle, near Barnsley, in South Yorkshire.

Viewers vote for one regional winner from each episode to go into a live final broadcast from the Tower of London.

Carole Souter, director of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said yesterday: "Restoration is helping viewers to get involved in the future of the country's heritage and is highlighting the threat that so much of it faces. We are proud to be part of it."

Restoration is presented by comedian and passionate conservationist Griff Rhys Jones, at 9pm.
