RECYCLING aluminium cans and foil could promote the planting of trees in County Durham.
The Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) is promising to plant a tree for each tonne of metal recycled over the next 12 months.
The initiative, part of a national scheme, is the latest to encourage people to recycle more than the 15 per cent of domestic waste.
Steve Freeman, of Alupro, said: "It couldn't be easier to take part in the programme, and however the aluminium is recycled it counts.
"Everyone has a local can bank they can use, either in neighbourhood centres or at the big shopping stores.
"For those with kerbside recycling that includes cans, simply put them in the box."
Councillor Brian Myers, Durham County Council cabinet member for waste management, welcomed the initiative, which is part of the council's Rethink Rubbish waste awareness campaign.
He said: "We challenge local people to support this project and further increase the amount of aluminium recycled in County Durham.
"We plan to use our share of the trees to brighten up local areas so we can see something coming back in return."
Recycling a can is said to achieve a 95 per cent energy saving.
