MORE than 75 Rotarians gathered at a musical event in memory of a fellow member.

Members of the Rotary Club of Teesside West attended a Last Night of the Proms night at Castle Howard, near York, in memory of Helen Hamilton.

They were invited to attend by Andrew Hamilton, husband of the former headteacher of Darlington's Polam Hall Girls School.

He had been unable to organise the traditional Rotary Club President's Night when he retired as president because of his wife's illness.

Mrs Hamilton's funeral, in May, was on the day the dinner and dance evening would have been held.

Mr Hamilton said: "Obviously it wasn't appropriate to have a dinner dance this year and the idea was to have a visit to the concert in her memory."

President Barry Tate said: "It was very sad but there were more than 75 members of our club and fellow Rotarians from Thornaby there, which was very nice."

The Rotarians have raised more than £2,200 for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer research charity since Mrs Hamilton's death, at the age of 57.

Mrs Hamilton was headteacher of Polam Hall School for 16 years and had taught at the school for 20 years.
