A £100,000 weather and wind monitoring mast has been erected at South Gare, near Redcar.
The 50-metre mast will be used to collect information about weather conditions and could lead to a large wind farm being built.
Northern Offshore Wind hopes to build 30 wind turbines 1.5km off the Redcar coast.
The mast will help the company find out if the scheme is viable.
Permission was granted to install the monitoring device last year.
A public meeting to discuss the planned wind farm will be held at Redcar Leisure Centre, from 6pm to 9pm next Wednesday.
