ONE of Britain's best-loved cars - the Ford Capri - could be about to make a comeback.
Ford is unveiling a new four-seater luxury concept car - the Visos, right, - at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Visos has been inspired by a number of former Ford favourites, including the Capri, which went out of production in 1986.
Motor industry experts believe the appearance of the Visos heralds a return to production of the Capri, which first went on sale in 1969 and was made at Halewood, on Merseyside.
Ford's European design director, Chris Bird, said: "The Visos is very dramatic and draws inspiration from some of the well-loved European Fords of the past."
A Ford spokeswoman said the Visos had given its young designers a chance to come up with new ideas and that the concept car was "a clear indication of how we want to go".
Seen as Europe's answer to the Mustang, the Capri caused a sensation when it was first shown at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1969.
The Capri was marketed as "the car you always promised yourself" and more than two million were sold during the next two decades.
Owners have included Sir Cliff Richard, motor racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart and Bodie and Doyle - the main characters from the TV series The Professionals.
