TORE Andre Flo's Sunderland nightmare was poised to end last night after Siena renewed their interest in the £6.75m misfit.

The Serie A club will contact Sunderland today regarding a £2.5m transfer.

Siena made an inquiry about Flo last month, but after looking elsewhere in their search for a striker the 30-year-old now tops their wanted list.

Flo's agent Gunnar Martin Kjenner said: "Tore Andre Flo is positive about moving to Siena.

"If there is the possibility of a move, he wants to play for them. But it depends on the clubs agreeing a deal."

The departure of Flo would be a huge boost to Mick McCarthy's attempts to slash the Sunderland wage bill.

Flo, the Black Cats' record signing, scored just four Premiership goals last season and was stripped of the No 9 shirt for the current campaign.

Meanwhile, Sunderland flop Nicolas Medina was last night sent to Spanish club Leganes on loan - after his Stadium of Light career cost the club almost £40,000 a minute.

Medina, signed amid much fanfare for £3.5m from Argentinos Juniors two years ago, has seen just 90 minutes' first-team action on Wearside.

The 21-year-old's only senior appearance for Sunderland was in last season's FA Cup third-round replay against Bolton Wanderers - meaning he never played in the League.

The purchase of Medina was another expensive mistake by Peter Reid, but he could now join Second Division side Leganes on a permanent deal. He has been given a season-long loan deal with a view to a £2.5m move if he has impressed by next summer.

Kevin Kilbane, who has turned down the chance to extend his Sunderland contract beyond this season, was watched by Everton manager David Moyes on Tuesday night.

Kilbane, who came off the bench for the final 23 minutes of the Republic of Ireland's 2-1 win over Australia, has been targeted by Moyes with a view to a possible £1m move.

Jason McAteer will miss Sunderland's two games over the Bank Holiday weekend, against Preston North End and Watford, as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.
