FOUR teenagers have taken the first step towards rock stardom, after winning a battle of the bands contest.

Chris Moodie, Andrew Scully, Karl Borrowdale and David Wilson, from Harelaw, near Stanley, were one of five Derwentside bands that took part in the competition, in the Lamplight arts centre in Stanley.

The collective, known as Death Underpants, beat rivals The Word by one vote. They won a day in a recording studio, to produce a demo CD.

They received their prize from Eleanor Seed, the recently appointed Spice young people's project officer at the district council.

Chris, who is involved in the campaign to bring skate parks to Consett and Stanley, said they were pleased to have won and looked forward to recording their CD in the studio.
