A MAYOR last night gave his support to a drive to get more people to give up their spare time for good causes.

Former police officer Ray Gibbon, the Liberal Democrat Mayor of Durham City, knows what he is talking about because he has been a volunteer for many years.

Councillor Gibbon gives his time to Durham Citizens Advice Bureau, is a steward at his local church and is president of Witton Gilbert Community Centre. His wife, Margaret, also gives her spare time to Durham Cathedral, volunteering as a steward.

Last night, the Durham Volunteer Bureau, which is Councillor Gibbon's chosen charity for his year in office, held its first open evening. The event, in Durham Town Hall, was held to encourage more people to volunteer to help the more than 100 groups registered with the bureau.

Councillor Gibbon said helping charities and local organisations was a rewarding experience.
