TWO ploughing rivals will be on home territory when they go head-to-head in a contest this weekend.
The annual ploughing match takes place at Beamish Museum, near Stanley, County Durham, tomorrow.
Resident horseman Peter Brassett will face world champion Jim Elliott, recently appointed as the museum's stockman, in the High Cut class of the competition.
Teams of heavy horses and ploughmen from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Scotland will take part. Clydesdale and Shire horses will participate in the Decorated Heavy Horse competition.
There will be displays of agricultural machinery, including a steam engine and thresher from the early 1900s, plus horse- drawn farm equipment such as a hay turner and seed drill.
Plots will be drawn at 10.30am and ploughing takes place between 11am and 3pm. Prizes will be presented to the winners after 4pm.
A lacemaking weekend also takes place at Beamish tomorrow and on Sunday. Members of the Northumbria Lacemakers will demonstrate their craft and there will be a display of laces.
