ANGLING
Low river conditions checked weights and kept the entry down for the Northallerton and District AC August Open on the river Swale at Scruton.
The first six in the frame all had double figures but several lost barbel impacted on the final results.
RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco's Jim Taylor fished a good match and won with over 10.0.0 to spare.
Pegged on the glide below the ICI bend, Jim found the patient approach paid off extracting 8 chub from underneath far bank willow cover on the bomb using both grub and bread to produce an impressive 25.10.0 at the scales.
Others: S McArdle (Brotherton) 15.0.0; D Watkins, (Derby) 14.7.0; B Havelock (Yarm) 12.8.0.
Bradford No 1 AA used their newly acquired Thornton Bridge stretch of the Swale for the A Phillips Memorial.
Formerly the Oak Tree Inn Day Ticket Water, 47 competitors lined the match length from the top of Fawdington Wood downstream to the Old Railway Bridge at Helperby.
Colin Hardy of Wibsey tamed a difficult river conjuring up 11.10.8 upstream of Thornton Bridge. Legering worm accounted for 3 chub and an eel.
For Bradford's John Nutall just three swims above a priceless barbel weighing 7.8.0 backed by 2 eels to bomb and meat made for 9.0.0.
Middlesbrough Open River Swale Holme (Wed): 1 J Herbert (RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco) 13.2.0; 2 S McArdle (Brotherton) 7.8.0; 3 S Taylor (RSPS Tek Neek Trabucco) 7.3.0.
On the River Ure an all chub catch decided Ripon Piscatorial's Helmsley Cup.
Set on the streams from Hutton Beck to Hewick, the fish were in an obliging mood and the results reflected this.
Ripon rod Keith Lamb used his local expertise to good effect collecting a magic dozen and totalling 25.2.0 for success.
Drawing peg 212 below Hutton Beck, Keith opted for the waggler offering a combination of caster bread and sweetcorn.
It was a bit of allsorts for Yarm's John Millican who netted 19.8.0.
Stickfloat and caster off peg 159 at Hewick Bridge tempted 3 big perch, dace and grayling before John managed to subdue 2 pike, the largest 10.0.0, which sealed runner up spot followed by Don McAllister (Brotherton) 18.10.0 and Graham Skirrey (Turners Tackle) 15.13.0.
Shimano Quaker's Andy Dargue almost doubled the next best bagging 22.0.0 in Sunday's Yarm AA Danby Cup on the Tees.
Andy two pegs below the Levenmouth on 157, fished the groundbait feeder with worm and caster. Mainly skimmers responded only interrupted now and again by a few perch.
Upstream on the adjoining peg 156 sat Mr Consistent Newman Scott's Dave Smiddy.
Dave on the pole and worm close in found all perch but then venturing across to the farside located two skimmers to weigh in 11.1.0.
Carp Scene
Carp fanatic Mark Coyne beat the midweek turnout at the Woodland Lakes recording 79.14.0 on Wednesday.
The Map Elton sponsored regular pegged on Partridge 6 caught inside all match. Alternating two lines at 4m 6m on the pole he netted all carp, the best one a common of 6.0.0, all to pellet.
In runner up spot Ripon's Nigel Carter didn't fancy his chances as he pulled out Skylark 16, an area with absolutely no winning form, but much to Nigel's surprise the swim came good producing several big fish up to 8.0.0 as the paste at 6m rolled em in for 77.0.0.
Sessay's Maple Lake continued its big weight form, as did Map Elton's Mark Coyne who hammered out a colossal 86.11.0 to take Thursday's event.
Fresh from victory the day before at the Woodland's, Mark on peg 52 had to work hard all day. Searching the far bank ledge at 13 metres maggot tempted all small carp, the best going 2.0.0.
Second man Simon Medd of Billingham Tackle Box also had to settle for small carp when identical tactics brought 77.12.0 off peg 25.
Woodland Lakes Saturday Open - Curlew Kestrel & Wagtail - 66 rods: 1 M Vanderkamp (Sensas Garbolino) 75.14.0 off Kestrel 27, silver fish & carp to caster and worm fished up in the water; 2 M Coyne (Map Elton) 66.9.0; 3 D Willans (Sensas Garbolino) 65.14.0.
