ENGLAND and Leeds United footballer Seth Johnson was charged yesterday with drink-driving, speeding and racing on the highway after he was arrested on a motorway.

Johnson, 24, was arrested on the M62 near Bradford with a 23-year-old whose case will now be considered by the Crown Prosecution Service.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 24-year-old man from Wetherby has been charged with drink-driving, speeding and racing on the highway, and bailed to appear at Dewsbury Magistrates' Court on August 29.

"In relation to the same incident a 23-year-old from York was reported last night for summons for racing on the highway and speeding."

Police said the alleged incident took place at 12.08am yesterday at the Catch Bar roundabout at junction 26.

Earlier, Leeds United confirmed Johnson's arrest in a short statement issued on its website.

In the statement, manager Peter Reid said: "The matter will be dealt with internally."

It said the club would be offering no further comment.

Midfielder Johnson was signed by Leeds from Derby for £7m in 2001.

Last season the player was on the verge of completing a move to Middlesbrough after talks with manager Steve McClaren.

But his switch to the Riverside fell through after he failed a medical on a suspect knee injury.
