A TEENAGER has appeared in court charged in connection with the hit and run death of a pensioner.
The 17-year-old from Hemlington, near Middlesbrough, faces a string of motoring offences after he was arrested in connection to the death of Redcar grandfather Bernard Darby.
Teesside magistrates yesterday heard the youth has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, taking a vehicle without consent, driving while disqualified and driving without a licence or insurance.
He is also charged with failing to stop and failing to report an accident.
The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, did not enter a plea.
Mr Darby, 75, of Penrith Close, Redcar, died in hospital the day after he was hit by a car while crossing Marton Road in Middlesbrough, on Monday, August 11. Magistrates granted the teenager conditional bail and adjourned his case until September 3.
He must adhere to a curfew between 10.15pm and 6am and present himself to police should they call at his home to check he is in.
The boy is also banned from coming into Middlesbrough except to see his solicitor and has been warned about interfering with any witnesses in the case.
