YOUNG offenders have put their talent for gardening to good use and won a national award.
The Windlesham Trophy was awarded to youngsters and staff from Deerbolt Young Offenders' Institute, near Barnard Castle, County Durham, by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
It honours the best-kept prison gardens in England and Wales, and was presented to governor Alan Tallentire by RHS president Sir Richard Carew Pole and Phil Wheatley, director general of the Prison Service.
The trophy recognised the quality of the Deerbolt gardens, which include water features, and was designed and maintained by four staff and eight youngsters.
The offenders won the awarded despite competing against adult prisons.
