Durham County: Two of the three Durham County teams had very good wins on their visit to Northumberland in the Region One Inter-Counties Championship.

The men's A team and the Ladies both won by 28-16 whilst the men's B narrowly lost by 23-21.

Steve Thompson of Sunderland and Michael Rhodes of Durham starred in the men's A team with four wins from their four games and they were very well backed by Paul Armstrong of Shildon, Dave Harrop of Consett, Chris Bowran of Durham and Ian Staines of Chester-le-Street with thee wins from their four outings.

None of the players had a clean sheet in the men's B team, although David Castledene of Consett, Paul Dudding of Chester-le-Street and Nik Veuger of Durham all managed to make three wins from their four games.

The Ladies team had Sue Seal of Sherburn, Helen Littlewood of Langley Park and Kay Brennan of Durham with unbeaten records in their four games, whilst Lindsay Hood of Durham won three of her four games and Natasha Mitchenson of Newton Aycliffe celebrated the recent birth of her baby by also scoring three wins from four games.

The next Durham County match will be on Sunday, 14 September when Humberside are the visitors.

Crook League

Crook Coach and Horses A held on to their fourth place in the First Division after they forced a draw against the visiting second placed, Crook Travellers Rest B. The Coach had two singles wins from Eric Reynolds and Lee Scott with Adam Martin, Ray Holliday and Paul Fiddis adding one each. The Travellers pulled level with two points from Michael Burke and one each from Doug Bowey, Neil Campbell and Jimmy Singlewood with Campbell with Burke and Singlewood with Bowey adding the two doubles.

Crook Olde Horse Shoe lead the First Division by 23 points from the Travellers Rest B, who are 15 points ahead of Crook Belle Vue. In the Second Division, Crook Coach and Horses B lead by 48 points with Crook King's Head six points ahead of Crook Golden Fleece B. However Howden Australian are not Kevin Carter and Steph Gill with David Brown, Stephen Dawson and Carl Maddison adding one each. They also took a doubles point from Stuart Miller and Carl Maddison. Croft had two singles points from Dave Parvin and one each from Dave Fenwick, Ian Robson and Dave Lacey with Parvin and Robson adding the doubles.

In the top of the table clash, Spennymoor strengthened their chances of landing the championship when they only dropped five points to the visiting league leaders, Shildon A. The Moors had two points each from Steve Hunter and Steve Jones with Sean Archer, Dave Bromley and Ronnie McAloon adding one point each, whilst the visitors points came from Michael Hoggart with two and Paul Armstrong, Paul Willey and Rance Richardson with one each.

The top five players in the race for the Player of the Year title are 1st John Bourne of Horden with 21 wins; 2nd Johnny Mason of Crook B with 20 wins; 3rd equal are Michael Burke of Crook A, Paul Biddle of Spennymoor and Steve Wray of Ferryhill with 19 wins each.

Bishop Auckland and District League

Ithe top of the table clash at Spennymoor Ash Tree the Crook Olde Horse Shoe team showed why they have been regular league winners with a three points victory. The home side had one singles point each from Steve Hunter, Steve Jones and Ronnie McAloon, whilst the Shoe went ahead with two points from Johnny Mason and Cliff Owens with Gavin Witton, Dave Leighton and Dave Walker adding one each. Owens and Mason extended the Shoe's lead but Paul Biddle made the score respectable for the Ash Tree when he beat Gavin Witton in both captain's games.

In the other top end of the table clash Crook Coach and Horses A shared the singles with the visiting Tow Law Station but then went on to take the remaining points. Lee Scott made two points for the Coach, whilst Michael Burke, Neil Campbell and Les Scott added one each. The Station levelled with two points from David Craggs and one each from Andrew Burrows, Shaun Umpelby and Tommy Sloan. The Coach took the doubles through Neil Campbell and Les Scott with Michael Burke taking both captain's points against David Craggs.

Crook Olde Horse Shoe lead the table by twenty points from Spennymoor Ash Tree, who have two matches in hand and are nine points ahead of Crook Coach and Horses.

Tow Law Scottish Courage League

Sunniside Comedian maintained their thrust for the title when they only dropped three points to the visiting Hamilton Row Black Horse. The home side had singles wins from Ray Johnson, Dave Walton, John Conley and John Hildreth with Chris Ellis and John Robinson replying. The Horse closed the gap when Frazer Armstrong and John Robinson took the first doubles but the Comic went on to win the final two doubles through John Conley with Morgan Errington and Dave Thompson with John Hildreth. This result leaves the Comic two points behind the leading Tow Law Dan's Castle A and three points ahead of Tow Law Football Club.

Tow Law New Market B only managed to take two points from the visiting Tow Law Football Club to slip back in the title race. Gavin Tennant took the only singles point for the home side, whilst Terry Ginty, Arthur Henderson, Lee Cullinan, Charlie Donaghy and Keith Muse won for the footballers, who went on to take two of the three doubles.
