NEWCASTLE United's Lee Bowyer is trying to improve his form in front of goal by following the predatory instincts of clubmate Alan Shearer, writes Paul Fraser.

Bowyer is hoping to keep his place in the Magpies line-up when champions Manchester United arrive at St. James' Park tomorrow.

And the 26-year-old, not at his best on his return to Elland Road last weeknd, wants to have an immediate impact on his first Premiership start in front of the Tyneside fans.

After leaving Leeds for West Ham midway through last season, Bowyer failed to score. His last goal was in the 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough on October 26.

But after arriving at Newcastle on a free transfer, he is convinced he can recapture his form.

And watching Shearer in action on the training ground is acting as an incentive to improve his goalscoring record.

"I'm looking to get ten goals this season and I feel I am capable of doing that," said Bowyer, who scored 69 during his days with Leeds and Charlton.

"I've got to say, Alan Shearer is an unbelievable finisher. I've played and trained with some of the great strikers in my time, but I've never seen anybody finish like he does.

"How he does it, I don't know and I'm watching him closely to see if I can get a few tips."

Meanwhile, Manchester United defender Gary Neville has told boss Sir Alex Ferguson he is fit for the trip to the North-East.

The defender has not played since suffering injury in the pre-season friendly with Celtic, but he made his comeback for the reserves against Blackburn.

And Neville said: "I have had a little bit of a hiccup these last few weeks. Now I feel fine.''
