FRENCH traders set up a Continental Market in Durham yesterday, selling traditional and hand-made products.

Bread baked in a wood oven, home-made biscuits, cider and olives were some of the items on offer at Durham's first French market, which is taking place in Millennium Place, outside the Gala Theatre.

The market was opened by deputy mayor of Durham City, Councillor Mary Hawgood and will run for four days in the city.

On Sunday and Monday, the Crusty Loaf bakery will set up a French caf in the Market Place and there will also be a balloon artist, portrait painter, music and entertainment in the city centre.

Trader Ali Cheboun said: "All the stalls have come directly from France, we are all from the Normandy region. We are a small unit of traders that sell traditional products."

The event is part of the Durham Marketing Initiative and was organised jointly by a number of agencies, including Durham City Council, the Prince Bishops Shopping Centre and the Gala Theatre.
