DEVASTATING fires could break out across North moorland as a lack of rainfall has left the vegetation tinder-dry.
And the outlook does not look any better, with the Met Office predicting the current dry spell will continue over the Bank Holiday.
Warning notices have been displayed throughout the North York Moors National Park, and people are being asked to be particularly vigilant in avoiding any fire risk.
Richard Grunton, of the National Park Authority, said the fire risk figures are among the highest the North Park Moors has had since records began.
He said: "Although the moors may look lush at the moment, underneath the vibrant purples and greens, the vegetation is extremely dry.
"It is vital that all precautions are taken until this current fire risk has passed."
Visitors are being warned not to light barbecues or drop matches or cigarettes.
