THE organisation hoping to build three parks in Durham for skateboard and BMX enthusiasts is inviting people to meet its trustees.

The Durham Skate and Bike Partnership has identified sites at Pity Me, Meadowfield and Belmont to create areas where youngsters can pursue their hobby without bothering other people.

The partnership, which hopes to win charitable status, will hold a public meeting in Durham Town Hall on Wednesday, September 3.

"Members of the public can come along, meet some of the trustees and have a look at the constitution,'' said project co-ordinator Linda Garbutt.

"We have got planning permission for the Pity Me site and the others are going through the planning process. Once that process is complete we will start raising funds for the project.

"We are hoping that if everything goes to plan we could have one of the parks up and running.

"There is a need for these parks. Young people are going as far afield as Leeds, Redcar and Thornaby.

"They are looking for somewhere locally to do their sports."

There have been problems in the city with riders and skateboarders causing damage at County Hall, the headquarters of Durham County Council, by performing stunts on steps, ramps and seats.

The partnership's meeting in the Town Hall will start at 2pm.
