A TEENAGER appeared in court on Saturday accused of killing a 57-year-old man.

The 16-year-old Sunderland youth came before city magistrates charged with the manslaughter of Wesley Fenton.

Police were called to Mr Fenton's home, in Delamere Court, in the Doxford Park area of Sunderland, following reports of an incident late on Thursday night.

Mr Fenton was found suffering serious head and facial injuries, and was pronounced dead on arrival at Sunderland Royal Hospital.

A post-mortem examination, carried out by a Home Office pathologist, revealed that Mr Fenton, a grandfather-of-five, died from a heart attack following the stress and trauma of an assault.

An 18-year-old Sunderland man arrested in connection with the attack was released by police without charge on Friday.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with manslaughter and went before a sitting of the magistrates on Saturday.

The case was adjourned and the teenager was bailed to an address outside the area, with conditions that he does not contact prosecution witnesses, surrenders his passport and reports weekly to police.

He will appear before Sunderland Youth Court tomorrow.
