A FORMER eyesore was transformed in time for the bank holiday weekend.

Work on Scarborough's derelict South Bay Pool was completed ahead of schedule, allowing residents and visitors to walk through the landscaped area. Councillor David Jeffels, cabinet member for tourism and leisure, said yesterday: "The pool has been an eyesore for many years and I am delighted that the site has been transformed and is once again a place where residents and visitors can enjoy a spectacular walk."

APPLY NOW: Charities and organisations wanting to hold Thursday or Saturday coffee mornings, or a craft fair door collection, next year, are asked to apply in writing to the town clerk, Richmond Town Hall, Market Place, Richmond, DL10 4QL. Applications must be received by September 23.

B&B BOOM: Scarborough is seeing its biggest bed and breakfast bonanza for over a decade according to hoteliers. Bonnie Purchon, former president of the Scarborough Hotels Association, who had been in the hotel business for 40 years, said: "The bank holiday has been one of the best ever; the town has been heaving. People have been knocking on the door as late as 10pm looking for somewhere to stay."

MAN RESCUED: An orienteerer was lowered 120ft on a rope and stretcher after breaking his ankle on the North Yorkshire Moors. Members of Scarborough and District Search and Rescue team and the ambulance service, rescued the 41-year-old Northumberland man after he fell down a steep bank near Harwood Dale, Scarborough.

IN COURT: A man is due to appear in court in Scarborough today following an incident at the town's Safeway supermarket at the weekend. Police said a 28-year-old man had been charged with possessing an offensive weapon, assault and shoplifting.
